The trench and dugout shaking. The earth rang again. Then someone said, "God forbid - straight... And then all at once tho.
I forced myself to take pictures in between artillery salvoes, to distract myself, to banish fear. It's very strange - when you flinch from explosions in five to ten steps and caught with nothing comparable to the "high" feeling, what a magical, intriguing, particularly dramatic is the light in the dugout, how interesting are your frame shape, what is its overall geometry... You think about the picture, concentrate, think major and minor in the frame, open the aperture and "dilute" the silhouettes in the background, experimenting with exposure, change the lens... After all that, you feel absolutely exhausted, because for that hour, which you spent in the dugout, with sweat and fear since you went out, pressed the energy of motion. You go out on the air, take off my flak jacket and feel like I can fly. You don't think about food or about what would need to change the soaking wet shirt - want to sleep. Th-tel-but... "
