According to the President, voting for the election of Ukraine nonpermanent member of the UN security Council showed a global level of international support for our country.
The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko made a statement in connection with the election of Ukraine nonpermanent member of the UN security Council. The full text of the appeal.
Finally it happened! Today, Ukraine was elected a non-permanent member of the security Council of the United Nations in 2016 - 2017.
It is the result of our collaboration: my as the President and Ukrainian diplomats. It is an unconditional recognition of the outstanding contribution of Ukraine, as founder of the Organization, the basic principles of the UN Charter, protection of rights and freedoms, the process of nuclear disarmament and international peacekeeping activities.
This convincing result shows the depth of international solidarity with Ukraine in the context of the ongoing external aggression by a permanent member of the UN security Council. We did it thanks to the courage and heroism of the Ukrainian people in the struggle for freedom and independence.
Each of the 177 votes cast today in the UN General Assembly in new York on Ukraine vote in support of state sovereignty, political independence and unity of Ukraine.
This vote demonstrated the truly global level of international support of Ukraine. First, we managed to create a European coalition, then extend its borders to the TRANS-Atlantic, today and in the 70th UN General Assembly turned it into a global.
On behalf of the Ukrainian people, I thank all our international partners and friends for their trust and solidarity.
This time the victory is especially valuable because we did it in a situation where the world faces complex challenges in recent decades: Ukraine became the object of external aggression, part of our territory occupied by Russia, a permanent member of the UN security Council.
That is why membership in the security Council gives us new opportunities to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity, but at the same time imposes on Ukraine additional responsibility for maintaining peace and stability in the world.
A key mission of our membership in the security Council will be resolute upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, developed under the leadership of the Ukraine 70 years ago.
It is about unconditional and unchanging values which form the basis of our world - the peaceful resolution of conflicts, respect for the principles of justice and international law.
Considerable attention to Ukraine will be paid to the reform of the security Council and to combat the abuse of veto power by the permanent members, one of whom was the aggressor against Ukraine.
The improvement of peacekeeping and peacebuilding activities of the UN, the fight against terrorism and its manifestations, the provision of legally binding security guarantees to countries that voluntarily get rid of nuclear weapons all it will be among the priorities of the future work of Ukraine in the security Council.
I sincerely congratulate the Ukrainian people for this international and diplomatic achievement for Ukraine! I have no doubt that it will help us to bring long-awaited peace, will contribute to the restoration of Ukrainian sovereignty over all Russian-occupied territories in the Donbas and in the Crimea.
Glory To Ukraine!
