Today marks 202 years since the birth of the outstanding Ukrainian poet, artist and writer, the founder of modern Ukrainian literature Taras Shevchenko.
Shevchenko was born on March 9 1814 in the village Moryntsi, Cherkasy region, Zvenigorodka County, Kiev province, in a family of serfs.
His ancestors from father's side was descended from a Cossack Andrew, who at the beginning of the eighteenth century came from Zaporizhska Sich. The ancestors of the mother, Catherine Akimovna Boyko, were displaced from the region.
Taras had six brothers and sisters: Catherine, Mary, Nikita, Irina, Mary and Joseph.
In 1831, Shevchenko was given 4 years as an apprentice to the artist Vasily Shiryaev in St. Petersburg. As part of the artel artist Shevchenko participated in the painting of the Saint Petersburg Bolshoi theatre as an apprentice draftsman.
In 1838 influential patrons Shevchenko, among them the painter Karl Bryullov, poets Vasily Zhukovsky and Evgeny Grebenko, bought a young poet free. The gentleman agreed to release a serf for a lot at the time the amount of 2.5 thousand rubles. In order to collect it, Karl Bryullov painted a portrait of Vasily Zhukovsky – tutor of the heir to the throne, and the portrait was drawn in a lottery in which took part the Royal family.
In 1840 he published the first collection of poems by Shevchenko "Kobzar", which included 8 poetry. The book sold out in two weeks and gained incredible popularity. Separate editions came out the poem "Haydamaky" (1841) and "hamalia" (1844).
